Hassan Khosrowshahi, C.M., O.B.C.

Hassan Khosrowshahi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1940. He was educated in Iran and England and obtained his degree in law and economics from the University of Tehran. Mr. Khosrowshahi immigrated to Canada in 1981 and founded the Inwest Group of companies. Since then he has dedicated much of his time to building businesses in British Columbia and across Canada.

Mr. Khosrowshahi founded Future Shop in the early 1980s. The company grew to become Canada’s largest electronics retailer, operating in every province in Canada and generating sales in excess of $2 billion. In 2001, Future Shop was sold to Best Buy for over $500 million.

In 1981, he formed Wesbild, a real estate development company known among others for the development of Westwood Plateau in Coquitlam, B.C. In 2002 he acquired Drug Royalty Corporation the predecessor to DRI Capital, an entity specializing in investing in royalties in pharmaceutical industry.

The Persis Group of companies has supported many philanthropic causes including Share Family and Community Services in Tri Cities. the Vancouver Symphony Society, Street to Home Foundation, B.C. Cancer Society, Pearson College, Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver Opera, Vancouver General Hospital, Museum of Anthropology, UBC, and the United Way.

Mr. Khosrowshahi is a past Chair and current member of the Board of trustees of the Fraser Institute. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Business Council of British Columbia, The Board of Directors of Canada Post, and the Board of the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur Sackler Gallery. He is a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and a member of the Board of Leading Edge Endowment Fund established by the Government of British Columbia. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Sauder School of Business and received a Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Earlier this year he was inducted to the Order of British Columbia.
