A proud third-generation British Columbian, Peter Brown has made a lasting impact on the province and has played a vital role in financing hundreds of BC businesses. After attending the University of British Columbia, he entered the investment business with Greenshields Inc. in 1962. Today he is Chairman of Canaccord Financial Inc. which he founded in 1968. Mr. Brown has transformed Canaccord from a small Vancouver based retail-oriented firm with a focus on Western Canada and resource companies, to Canada’s largest independent investment dealer with a head office in Vancouver, BC and thirty-eight offices worldwide.

In addition to building a world-class Canadian financial company, Mr. Brown has been a dynamic contributor to the community. He has served on the boards of numerous private sector and crown corporations over the years. Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Board of the Fraser Institute, a Director of the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion Project Limited & Pavilion Corp. and as a Director of the Investment Industry Association of Canada. He also served as federally appointed Lead Director and Member of the Finance Committee for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Games which successfully brought the Vancouver 2010 Olympics to Canada. He was also recently elected as a director to the Vancouver Board of Trade. Among his attainments, he was the Chairman of the University of British Columbia, the Vancouver Stock Exchange, BC Place Corporation and BC Enterprise Corporation. He was also the Vice Chairman of Expo 86 Corporation.

Mr. Brown’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. He is a recipient of a number of awards and recognition for his corporate and community involvement including the BC Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year Award, the BC & Yukon Chamber of Mines Financier Award, the Pacific Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and Distinguished Service Award by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. In 2003, he was awarded a Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and the Order of British Columbia. Mr. Brown has also been recognized by the Brotherhood Inter-Faith Society as their Person of the Year in 2004. He received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of British Columbia in 2005, and he received the Distinguished Graduate Award from St. George’s School and the Ted Ticknor Award for Exceptional Contribution from Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver in 2007. Mr. Brown received the Fraser Institute’s T. Patrick Boyle Founder’s Award became and the first ever civilian commendation from the Vancouver City Police. In 2010, he was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame and was presented with the Entrepreneur of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award.

Through Canaccord, the Peter & Joanne Brown Foundation and personal philanthropy he supports children’s, arts and community charities as well as the BC political system.
