Co-founder of Ballard Power Systems
Dr. Geoffrey Ballard was a pioneering Canadian scientist, entrepreneur and business leader whose work helped establish British Columbia as a centre for hydrogen fuel-cell innovation. Trained as a geological engineer, he earned a doctorate in earth and planetary sciences and combined scientific expertise with business acumen and a vision for cleaner energy.
In 1979, Ballard founded Ballard Research Inc. to develop advanced lithium batteries. As the company explored cleaner energy technologies, it began developing hydrogen fuel cells in 1983, laying the groundwork for what became Ballard Power Systems. Under his leadership, the company advanced fuel-cell technology for transportation, unveiling a zero-emission fuel-cell-powered demonstration bus at Science World in Vancouver in 1993. Ballard’s work attracted international investment and partnerships, including from Daimler and Ford, and helped bring hydrogen fuel-cell technology closer to commercial application.
Ballard’s influence extended beyond his own company. His pioneering work helped foster British Columbia’s clean-technology sector and inspired generations of scientists, entrepreneurs and business leaders. Known for his collaborative leadership, he mentored colleagues and emerging researchers, encouraged employees to share in business success, and believed that business could serve a broader purpose beyond profit.
His achievements earned international recognition, including being named Hero for the Planet by Time magazine in 1999 and Business Leader of the Year by Scientific American in 2002. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1999 and received the Order of British Columbia in 2003, alongside numerous other honours and honorary degrees.
Geoffrey Ballard’s legacy lives on in the clean-energy sector he helped advance and in the people he inspired through his vision, integrity and commitment to applying science to global challenges.
